Packing Up Jesus
The Carols have been sung, the presents are being used, some have been exchanged and some have been thrown into the drawer, forgotten because they weren’t what we wanted. We have taken down the tree and put the decorations away. Another Christmas has come and gone. We’ve celebrated the Christ child, have eaten too much and maybe even slept too much. It’s time to get back to normal, whatever that is.
In packing up Christmas have we also packed up baby Jesus and put Him away until next Christmas? All that anticipation before the big day, the day has come and gone, and we are left with the ho-hum that hits many between Christmas and New Year’s.
Christ is ours to enjoy everyday not just at Christmas. He wants to be involved in our daily lives. If the relationship is to become strong we need to be in touch as often as possible preferably every day. “But I don’t speak to my brother everyday,” we say “and we have a great relationship!” Well that’s well and good but we need to remember that Jesus is not only our royal brother but also God the Father and as His disciples we should follow His example. In His earthly life, He spoke to His Father daily, early in the morning and often for a great length of time. Our earthly fathers may not be so keen to have a lengthy chat before sunrise but Jesus is always up for a chat.
Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us that “the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” If we have packed Jesus up with the decorations, these are the things that we will miss on a daily basis and our lives will continue to be ho-hum and we will ask the question, “Is that all there is?” There is so much more to be had and to be enjoyed. If we have packed Jesus up for the year, let’s unpack Him right now and resolve to come to Him on a daily basis to experience anew His mercies every morning.
